about

“Moving deeper into the forest, the seams of this notebook unravel”

“Deeper Into The Forest is both original and and evocative. Hayes and Meyers are a perfect pairing...while Susheela’s stunning voice acts like a haunting melody linking the poems and the music on a higher level.  Meyers has such a breadth of musical experience and desire, and Diana Hayes is fearless in her metaphors. ” Brian Brett

On Deeper Into the Forest, Diana Hayes’ rich, resonant voice takes her words off of the page and deep into a world of sound created by Andy Meyers.

Diana’s writing begins in the wilds of her West Coast island home. Her poems open you to nature, immerse you in it, make you remember that there is not a point where you stop and nature starts.

It’s a gritty, in focus look at the magic of it all. Death makes it’s regular, natural appearances-- In a palliative bed, or in the bones of last year’s kill, found settling into the loam. There is no separation. Nature follows us from the forest into our homes, to where we work, and back into our memories, or the memories of those who are already gone, settled into the earth.

“I entered a magical place, difficult and exhilarating, demanding and exciting, frightening and uplifting. The three voices carried me there.” Eliane Leslau Silverman, Professor Emeretis of Woman’s Studies, University of Calgary

Composer/producer Andy Meyers was co-recipient of Canada Council Grants to score two CDs of spoken word with award winning poet Brian Brett. (“an often unsettling meld of orphan sounds and menacing undercurrents, and an offbeat celebration of those old staples: love, experience, sex and death.” Paul Tucker, Quietus) In 2019 Andy wrote music for the documentary Dosed, which played movie theatres around the world and won ‘Peoples’ Choice’ awards at various Film Festivals. (“A must see film- a captivating, white knuckle experience” Forbes).

At his Allowed Sound Studio, Andy has worked on recordings for Art Bergmann and Leeroy Stagger, and performed on and recorded CR Avery’s 2016 spoken word album A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Mix-Tape Genius. He has released two albums of improvised music that sold 6000 CDs. Further back, Andy co-founded Toronto art-punk pioneers The Scenics in 1976. (“New York had Talking Heads, but here was their equal in Toronto” B Mersereau, CBC).

Andy’s wrote the music for Deeper into the Forest on a century old pump organ, a 1951 model Telecaster, and a forty year old Guild acoustic guitar.

The third voice on Deeper into the Forest is acclaimed chanteuse, Susheela Dawne (“poetry transforms under the spell of her sexy, whispering voice” Chuck Foster, The Big Takeover). Susheela’s wordless vocals are articulate like nature itself-- speaking beyond words.

But this project is grounded in the words. Diana Hayes has received her BA and MFA in Creative Writing. She has published 6 books of poetry and drama. In 2019 she started Raven Chapbooks, publishing emerging and established poets in BC. Her experience working in palliative care strengthens her exploration of nature and deeply informs her writing. In 2002, Diana founded the Salt Spring Seals, an all-season open-water swim team that braves the ocean bays around Canada’s Gulf Islands.

For more than a decade, Diana has expanded her poetic vision into photographic dreamscapes and narratives. Her work has been included in shows throughout British Columbia. Diana’s powerful photographs are featured in her books, and in the Deeper Into the Forest CD art, and in a video for the album’s title track.

Deeper Into the Forest is a dream-like exploration of the points where nature, our nature, memory, family, travel, life, and death meet in quiet power, seams intact and strong, interwoven like the forest.

Thanks to the BC Arts Council for their support with this album.
Poems heard on the CD are selected from Diana’s book Labyrinth of Green, published by Plumleaf Press/Rubicon 2019.
